They say the Fairy Queen hails from County Limerick. She’s the red mare of the midsummer day, blessing the land and fire. They say she’s radiant, splendourous, joyful and bright in her full glory. Her name is Áine, the goddess of summer, wealth && love. She was loved and adored by her descendants, the people of Ireland, they celebrate her in a feast held in midsummer.

There are many tales about her. One says that she bit off the ear of King Ailill Aulom of Munster because he raped the poor goddess, this made him unfit to be king.

Another states that the Third Earl of Desmond, Gerald FitzGerald took her as his wife without her consent by stealing Áine’s cloak while she swam in a river and not giving it back until she married. She later turned him into a goose, killed him or both.

One even says that she’s the wife or daughter of the sea god, Manannán mac Lir.
